Transformation

We speak of a butterfly's transformation,
But forget it requires disintegration.
For the caterpillar doesn’t simply grow wings.
It goes through a process of messy things.
Inside the chrysalis it starts to dissolve,
Getting broken down in order to evolve.
From the outside not one thing looks changed.
But inside the cocoon, it is all rearranged.
Each part is evaluated for its use in the new,
And some get discarded after review.
Eventually the butterfly starts to grow,
And its brilliant wings begin to show.
Change is not easy and usually not clean,
And the messy middle is rarely seen.
But even though others can’t see what’s within,
It’s through this chaos that transformation begins.
